So, you have set your sights on Oxbridge?

If you have been puzzled when people mention “Oxbridge”, wondering if they are referring to the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, or perhaps a separate institution altogether, you are not alone. The term “Oxbridge" is actually a portmanteau — a blend of two distinct words. In this case, “Oxbridge” is a fusion of “Oxford” and “Cambridge”, collectively referring to these two venerable universities of England.

Oxford and Cambridge, recognized globally for their academic excellence, have rigorous and competitive admission processes. It is crucial to embark on your application journey well in advance. Here is one very important thing to keep in mind as you tread this path: applicants must choose between Oxford and Cambridge, a simultaneous application to both universities is not permissible.

The Collegiate System: The Unique Oxbridge Experience

What sets Oxbridge apart from other UK universities? A unique aspect of these institutions lies in their collegiate structure. Unlike most UK universities, Oxford and Cambridge are composed of distinct colleges, forming what is known as a “collegiate system”. This means that your residence on campus (at least during your first year) and your academic pursuits are nestled within a smaller community that exists within the larger university framework.

While some may assume that this college system is no different than residence halls found in other universities, it actually offers so much more! Each college serves as a ready-made social nucleus, replete with its own traditions, events, and clubs. Moreover, since most colleges offer a diverse array of subjects, the student body within the colleges fosters an interdisciplinary environment. Your academic journey at Oxbridge is often shaped by your college, as many of your tutors are likely to be affiliated with it. This system creates a rich and intimate learning experience, tailored to meet individual student needs.

The Tutorial/Supervision System

Another distinguishing feature of Oxbridge lies in its tutorial (Oxford) or supervision (Cambridge) system. This method of learning may be a departure from what you have previously encountered, as it champions a higher degree of independence.

A tutorial or supervision is a session where your tutor or supervisor evaluates and discusses a piece of work or an essay that you have submitted in advance. The meetings often involve just you, or occasionally a small cluster of two or three students. As a student, you bear the responsibility of self-guided learning using various resources to produce your own work. Your tutor or supervisor then reviews your work and uses it as a springboard for in-depth discussions.

The purpose of this system is to maximize the quality of time spent with world-renowned academic tutors or supervisors, focusing on meaningful dialogue and critical insights, rather than simply imparting basic facts. Given its intensity, it is vital to introspect about your comfort with this type of learning before deciding to apply to Oxbridge.

Application Deadlines and Requirements

Unlike other UK universities that set their application deadlines towards the end of January, Oxbridge sets their application deadline in mid-October. This means you will start working on your application much earlier than most of your peers.

In addition, Oxbridge frequently incorporates extra admissions tests to assess your aptitude and subject-specific knowledge. It is essential to diligently research in advance whether your intended course or college necessitates this, as well as check the registration deadline for the exams.

While interviews may be a discretionary component of the application process at other UK universities, they are a requisite step at Oxbridge. These interviews tend to have a sharp academic focus, reflecting the universities’ commitment to intellectual rigor.

Understanding Term Times

Lastly, it is imperative to familiarize yourself with the term times at Oxford and Cambridge. These esteemed universities are known for their eight-week academic terms and six-week holidays. This may sound appealing at first glance, but it does not translate to less work. In fact, Oxbridge is notorious for assigning a hefty amount of work within a short timeframe!

Most courses also include “collections”, short exams conducted at the start of each term to ensure you have retained knowledge from the previous term's content throughout the holiday.

If your motivation to apply to Oxbridge is solely rooted in its historical buildings, illustrious alumni, or merely to test the waters, then it may not be the best fit for you. However, if you are prepared to immerse yourself in a rigorous curriculum complemented by a personalized teaching approach, then you are on the right track! Continue to research and explore the Oxbridge experience; your journey to two of the world's finest universities begins here.
